The indissoluble bond between Sea Buckthorn and space industry

Time:2023-05-18

On the evening of May 10, 2023, China successfully launched the Tianzhou-6 cargo spacecraft from Wenchang, sending astronauts in orbit clothing, food, fresh fruit and other materials. Speaking of fruit, but you know what? Sea buckthorn, the "king of vitamin C" and the "crown of fruits and vegetables" in the plant field, is inextricably linked to the space industry.

Seabuckthorn is a kind of medicinal and edible homologous plant containing a variety of vitamins, trace elements, amino acids and other bioactive substances. As early as in the former Soviet Union, it was developed into space health products for astronauts. "In March 1981, Soviet cosmonauts Ferakimir Kovarenok and Piktor Katznoha sent news from orbit that taking sea buckspine would greatly enhance their ability to adapt to weightlessness."

On June 5, 2022, Shenzhou 14 manned spacecraft carrying 2,000 selected sea buckthorn seeds into space. After a 183-day business trip, it returned with astronauts on December 4, 2022. The space breeding provided a new attempt for more efficient development and utilization of seabuckthorn seeds.
